Faculty scientists recognised by Academy of Medical Sciences

Three academics from the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine have been awarded Fellowships by the prestigious Academy of Medical Sciences. In all, forty-eight of the UK’s world-leading researchers were elected. 

Professors Frank Kelly, Giovanna Lombardi and Catherine Williamson have been elected for their outstanding contributions to biomedical and health science, leading research discoveries, and translating developments into benefits for patients and the wider society.

Professor Kelly is a Professor of Environmental Health and Head of the Department of Analytical, Environmental & Forensics Sciences. His research focuses on free radical/antioxidant biochemistry and the impact of atmospheric pollution on human health.

Professor Lombardi, Professor of Human Transplant Immunobiology, is a leading researcher in transplant rejection and tolerance. Her research has a focus on mechanisms that lead to tolerance in the context of transplantation and translation for immunotherapy.

Professor Williamson, Professor of Women’s Health, is a clinical researcher who specialises in maternal medicine. Her foremost research focuses on the causes and outcomes of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP), a common liver disease amongst pregnant women.

The new Fellows will be formally admitted to the Academy at a ceremony on 27 June 2018.
