Professor Silvina Milstein's 'Shan Shui' a finalist for Royal Philharmonic Society award

Congratulations to Professor Silvina Milstein, whose inspirational composition ‘Shan Shui’ is a finalist for one of the Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) Music Award, which celebrates "the outstanding, the pioneering and the inspirational in live classical music, synonymous to the Oscars, Grammys, and BAFTAs". 

'Shan Shui’, which translates to mountain – water, belongs to a group of Silvina's chamber music compositions inspired by imagery and symbolism of certain ancient contemplative traditions, resulting in works that entice the listener into a journey of sensuous discovery.

“My Shan Shui outlines a dream-like form, that relies on a small variety of gestures, which while sometimes behaving like traditional musical 'motives' can also unfold without the expectations of classical development, as if 'calligraphic brushstrokes' in ancient Chinese painting,” says Silvina.

The composition was supported by a Research Fellowship from the Leverhulme Trust, who provide grants to experienced researchers.

Silvina is the third composer from King’s to be a finalist for the prestigious Award, after Sir George Benjamin and Sir Harrison Birtwistle, who have both previously won the Award.
