£800,000 funding for cardiovascular research

Guy’s and St Thomas’, in partnership with King’s, has successfully been awarded almost £800,000 to establish a Healthcare Technology Co-operative (HTC) in Cardiovascular Disease by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). 

The HTC is one of eight new HTCs being funded by the NIHR to support NHS organisations in developing new medical devices and healthcare technologies.

Cardiovascular disease is one of the UK’s leading causes of illness and death. As one of the largest cardiovascular specialist centres in the UK, Guys and St Thomas’ in collaboration with its academic partner King’s College London has led the way in developing pioneering new treatments and innovative practices in diagnosing cardiovascular disease. 

The NIHR Guy’s and St Thomas’ Cardiovascular HTC will help clinicians to identify and develop solutions that use technology, and which are focused on clinical need and improving patient care. 
The HTC will be a collaborative undertaking bringing together clinicians, scientists, industry leaders and patients to develop and apply cardiovascular technologies to improve clinical care and achieve better outcomes for patients. 

Sir Ron Kerr, Chief Executive Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, says: 'Our clinicians and researchers have been leading the development of new techniques to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease for many years, for example, using touchless computer game technology during complex vascular surgery. Through the NIHR HTC we have an exciting opportunity for us to build on our expertise in cardiovascular disease and imaging, to improve care for patients.'
