2016/17 Performance Teams Announcement

Today’s King’s Sport Performance Team announcement see’s eight university sports club teams confirmed as Performance Teams for the 2016/17 season.

2015/16 was an exciting year for the university’s Performance Teams. From securing wins that contributed to King’s College London sports clubs securing a first London Series Varsity victory in spring, to helping spearhead a record number of BUCS points at the close of the competitive season, the continued success of King’s Sport Performance Teams has called upon more of King’s College London’s highly achieving teams to become part of the Performance Sport roster.

The upcoming 2016/17 academic year will see seven of last year’s Performance Teams continue to receive performance support. King’s College London’s (KCL) men’s badminton, women’s basketball, men’s and women’s hockey and men’s rugby all retain the performance status of their top competitive team. Amongst Guy’s, King’s College & St Thomas’ Hospitals (GKT) medical school teams, netball and men’s hockey also continue.

KCL Women’s Rugby 1st XV will join the programme as its newest addition. The team were finalists in the BUCS South Eastern Conference Cup, and having won 90% of their BUCS league matches last season finished 10 points clear at the top of their league table, earning promotion to South Eastern 1 league. The additional strength and fitness development that are a key aims of any Performance Team should find the team well for the start of a new season.

Their male counterparts will also be stepping up competitions following the restructuring of all BUCS rugby leagues ahead of 2016/17. Having finished fourth in their debut Premier B league season, the 1st XV will begin the year in Premier South A.

One team that returns to the top BUCS Premier South league is KCL men’s badminton after they won all 10 of their league matches and two playoff matches in 2015/16.

The strength of hockey at King’s is shown by the inclusion of three teams in the Performance Team list. Last season university hockey teams combined to earn more than one out of every nine BUCS points registered by all King’s teams. Both KCL men’s and women’s 1st XI and the GKT men’s 1st XI feature a number of individual King’s Sport Performance Athletes, including KCL men’s captain and U-21 Great Britain Hockey player James Simpson.

“The natural ability and athletic potential of all our performance teams is extremely high. The Performance Sport programme is progressing year on year, and it is fostering an air of excitement within our Performance Teams”

King’s Sport wishes all its Performance Teams success in 2016/17.
