King's student wins Super bowl equivalent
Third year political economy student Kane Alexander was part of the London Warriors team that took home the UK’s top American football trophy last month after they won the British Super Bowl equivalent, Brit Bowl 28.
The West London based Warriors team, who play in the top Premier BAFA (British American Football Association) National League, beat cross-town rivals the London Blitz 10-8 at the John Charles Stadium in Leeds.
Kane featured for the wining team having been spotted whilst playing for the College’s student team, the King’s College London Regents.
Despite having only started playing American football two years ago, on Sunday 14th September the King’s student lined up as a defensive lineman in the Brit Bowl tasked with slowing and stopping the opposition’s offense. In a tight game the Warriors ultimate triumph meant they retained the title that they had first won in 2013, whilst Kane walked away with a winner’s medal from the highest level of domestic American football.
American Football is currently enjoying a rise in both interest and participation. Indeed it is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. This growth was reflected last year with the inclusion of the sport within BUCS and the creation of recognised university American Football leagues. King’s College London Regents are currently represented in BUCS by one men’s team and one mixed team. Anyone interested in trying or playing the sport at King’s can find more details here:
