TRS hosts guest lecture by Hollywood film director Tom Shadyac
On Wednesday 23 January 2013 the Department of Theology & Religious Studies hosted a guest lecture by Hollywood film director Tom Shadyac, preceded by a screening of his new film I AM.
Tom, the Hollywood film director responsible for blockbuster hits Ace Ventura, Bruce Almighty and Liar Liar, has turned his back on his A-list lifestyle in pursuit of a more fulfilling way of life. His latest project sees him forego the cast and crew of a blockbuster movie and travel with a crew of just four to interview some of the greatest minds in the modern world, from Noam Chomsky to Desmond Tutu. In the film he asks them: 'What's wrong with the world and what can we do to fix it?'
The answers are a compelling argument to support Tom's choice to abandon his lavish home and private jet and begin a life helping others – a choice he made after suffering a brain injury and reassessing the meaning of his own existence. He now lectures in the US, speaking about his new philosophy on life. He lives simply in a mobile home community and cycles to work every day. Most importantly, Tom has set up The Foundation for I Am with all money from the release of the film going to fund worthy causes.
Speaking in conversation with the Revd Professor Richard Burridge (pictured right), Dean and Professor of Biblical Interpretation, Tom talked about his new way of life and the spirituality that inspired it. He said: ‘I didn’t feel as if I was giving something up – I felt as if I was moving toward something that worked better for my life. I have a lot less money but I have become much richer. There is no greater force in my life than the force we call God.’
Professor Joan Taylor, who co-ordinated the event, said afterwards:
"The large and enthusiastic student audience was treated to a rich exploration of life, ethics and spirituality, after viewing Shadyac's new documentary film 'I Am'. The Dean, Rev. Prof. Richard Burridge engaged Shadyac in conversation and fielded questions from the floor, producing a fascinating discussion. There was much applause for the lively and inspiring words of wisdom, flecked with humour, provided by a man with a powerful message for today's world."
