Dr Daniel Nilsson DeHanas nominated for London award

Dr Daniel Nilsson DeHanas has been nominated for the King’s Award for Most Outstanding Contribution to London and Local Communities, for his work in Tower Hamlets.

He was nominated in relation to more than ten years of research, policy consulting, and public engagement in the locality.  In recent years this has included co-organising the 2016 ‘Immigrants of Spitalfields’ festival with local charities to celebrate immigrant contributions through music, literature, art, and lectures, as well as playing a key filmed role in the BBC Great British Railway Journeys TV episode on immigration history in Spitalfields.

Dr DeHanas uses his book London Youth, Religion, and Politics: Engagement and Activism from Brixton to Brick Lane (Oxford 2016) as a core teaching text to engage students with original research and with ‘London as a classroom.’  Each year he takes students on an immersive fieldtrip to research sites in Spitalfields, which have included Sandy’s Row Synagogue, the Brick Lane Mosque, and the East London Mosque.  DeHanas also brings London teaching to a large King’s audience with the AKC lectures, ranging from a talk on British mosque architecture to an upcoming talk on a brief history of Spitalfields immigration, from Huguenots to hipsters.
