Policy-relevant research on all aspects of multilateral diplomacy as it relates to nuclear non-proliferation

A significant portion of research carried out by the Centre for Science and Security Studies (CSSS) is devoted to understanding the various ways in which diplomatic efforts between states and international organisations influence broader non-proliferation efforts in the nuclear domain.

The NPT Briefing Book is edited by Dr Hassan Elbahtimy and used by national delegations and civil society as part of their preparation for NPT meetings.

With initial funding support from the British Academy, research focusing on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Regime Complex, led by Dr Benjamin Kienzle, sheds new light on the complex and often deficient maze of non-proliferation institutions and agreements. It explores concrete cases of friction between the different institutions dealing with nuclear non-proliferation issues. The study also systematically highlights how international organisations and some of their Member States have been able to manage and sometimes almost eliminate the frictions between different institutions by making efficient use of informal cooperation mechanisms.

Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Briefing Book

The NPT Briefing Book is a reference guide containing a wide selection of documents related to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and its review process. It is widely used by national delegations as well as members of civil society as part of their preparation for NPT meetings.

Success in the P5 Process

In partnership with the European Leadership Network (ELN), CSSS is leading an innovative project funded by the U.K. Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) to identify potential opportunities and challenges for the P5 Process in advance of the 2020 NPT Review Conference (RevCon).
