Educating local children about oral health

Tooth decay is a common health problem in the UK and affects most people at some stage in their lives. Simple measures and advice can make a huge difference and the SMILE Society is taking these insights out into the local community.

The  KCL SMILE Society  is a non-profit charitable organisation run by dental students from King’s to improve knowledge of good dental health in the local community.

The society runs interactive workshops for children in key stages 1-3 (age 5 to 14), focussing on preventative dental care, maintaining good oral hygiene and diminishing fear of going to the dentist.

The workshops cover such topics as brushing teeth correctly and the impact of sugar and diet on teeth and aim to be as engaging and entertaining as possible, creating a comfortable environment for asking questions.

Co-President of the SMILE Society Sarita Kang said: ‘A lot of the children we work with haven’t actually been to the dentist, so it’s really important that we go there (to schools) and make them feel comfortable with seeing the dentist.’

The society delivers a range of activities so the children have fun while they learn, such as disclosing teeth to show plaque build-up.

‘They really like doing that because they are actually quite shocked to see purple teeth. It’s really fun for them.’

As well as providing King’s dental students with valuable experience, working with local school children also allows students to use their education and knowledge to give back to the community.

‘It’s really good to go out and work with children and help prevent them getting any disease. Hopefully they have a memorable experience and take something from it.’
