Emergency Call for Contributions – Abortion Rights and Roe vs Wade

Following the leak of the US Supreme Court draft document regarding the overturning of the Roe vs Wade ruling, women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights are once again at risk in the USA.

If the draft ruling passes, Planned Parenthood estimates that around 36 million women and people of other genders who may need to use abortion services in the country could lose access to safe, legal abortion, putting their health and possibly lives at risk, as well as assaulting their freedom to choose. The ruling will also likely have an impact on the international policy arena.

In response to this, Feminist Perspectives is inviting abstract submissions for our Emergency Open Call for short pieces (800-1,000 words) on the potential reversal of Roe vs Wade in the USA. What will be the wider consequences for women’s and people of other genders’ sexual and reproductive rights in the USA and what other rights may be affected as a result? What might be the international spillover effects of the ruling, considering the powerful influence of USAID on sexual and reproductive healthcare provision in other countries, particularly in Latin America? How might the overturning of Roe vs Wade bolster the confidence of conservative and reactionary movements to campaign to overturn other rights? Finally, how are/might feminist movements to continue to organise globally to confront and resist these setbacks?

We welcome contributors from both within and outside the KCL community, in particular those with personal experience of oppression or who are from/based in the Global South. We invite potential contributors to express their interest by emailing the Editorial Collective at feministperspectiveskcl@gmail.com. The email should include ‘Emergency Open Call – Abortion Rights’ in the subject line and a short description (100-150 words max) of your proposed piece. Please specify whether you are proposing a research-based or a reflective piece and provide five key words summarising the key themes covered. Upon acceptance, the lead editors will provide you with details for submission and a timeline for the review and publication of your piece. This call will receive applications on a rolling basis until Friday 20th May, after which we will contact all prospective contributors. We look forward to receiving your submissions!

In solidarity,

The Editorial Collective of Feminist Perspectives
