Independent Learning Room (ILR)

The ILR (Independent Learning Room) is a designated space for students to practise clinical skills. It is situated on the Ground floor of the Chantler saIL Centre and is available Monday to Friday, 09:00 – 17:00.

In Term 1, sign ups on line are not operated due to less demand generally. The ILR is open however and is accessible by contacting the Front Desk - either in person or emailing and arranging a time.

In Terms 2 & 3, the on line sign-ups come into effect. There are four, two hour sessions daily. Students are expected to clear away and tidy up after their session, reflecting the expected level responsibility consistent with the professional clinical environment and the spirit of co-operation in which these facilities are offered. The last 10-15 minutes of every 2 hr slot is set aside for this.

There are twenty available places in each of the four daily sessions, enabling up to 80 students to practise independently on any given day. Access is by way of on-line sign ups, details of which are given below. Students may only sign up for a maximum of two sessions in any given week. Upon arrival at the Centre, students should check in to reception, sign in and leave their student cards before going through to the ILR.

There is usually an allowance for some consumables used in the run up to OSCEs but students may wish to buy new sterile equipment for extra practice at the online store (see opposite).

Room availability

The Chantler Simulation & Interactive Learning Centre endeavours to offer independent learning facilities whenever possible. Demand greatly increases from February onwards in the run up to the OSCEs. As OSCEs would limit the use of the ILR, we arrange for alternative facilities throughout the spring and summer, so that Independent Learning can be continuous. Priority should be given to students whose OSCE date is imminent and students are requested to respect this. Please visit the link for the locations of the ILR during OSCE season/OSCE dates:
