1st Year Law student, The Dickson Poon School of Law

Meet Ami, a first-year Law student and one of seven King's students participating in Changemakers (now Gamechangers), an internship with a difference, where students are paid to find, develop and launch an idea into the world.

About me

Hi, my name is Ami Jemide and I’m a first year Law student. I like to be known for excellence, kindness and joy. I love helping people and making them smile!

To me, being a ‘Changemaker’ means being fearless and openminded in whatever you do. When I think of ‘Changemaker’ or ‘Entrepreneur’, I think of my Dad. He inspires me a lot because of how passionate he has always been about whatever he takes on

Idea and Inspiration

I care about solving problems linked to relational conflict.

My idea has been through so many transformations! Amity App is a financial management platform to help divorced or separated individuals manage shared finances in order to effectively co-parent. The inspiration is pretty personal. As a child of divorced parents, I’ve lived through the consequences of uncoordinated parental action. Having had such negative experiences, I feel strongly that children shouldn’t be disadvantaged because of their parents choices or decisions, which is why I created Amity.

Changemakers

I have an entrepreneurial spirit and have embarked on an entrepreneurial path for many years. At age 14, I had a wig making service. At 16, I started a social media blog. At 17, I created a brand to sell 100% reusable cotton bags in Nigeria. Now aged 18/19, I am playing around the idea of ed tech software.

With all that in mind, I found Changemakers to be immediately inviting because it is fundamentally based on helping you hone your entrepreneurial skills and passion (through the process of actually building and developing a start-up idea), which is something I aspire to do. I’ve enjoyed the idea generation process the most. Overseeing your own idea and bringing it to life in your own way has been really fulfilling.

I've also learnt the importance of lateral communication! Younger people are often told to reach out to older, more experienced people for networking, advice and wisdom, but this programme has shown me how important it is to talk with your peers, hear what they have to say and build strong relationships with them. Overall the experience has been informative, challenging and creative.

Top tips

Take your time. If your idea is supposed to fit into this world, it will fit in its own time and space. Don’t rush it, enjoy the process and trust yourself.

King’s Changemakers (now Gamechangers) is an internship with a difference. Instead of working for someone else, students are paid to find, develop and launch an idea into the world. The solution might be an idea for a new business, a non-for-profit or a community project. The nine-week initiative, run by the Entrepreneurship Institute (EI), gives King’s students from a widening participation background the chance to work on a problem they’re passionate about solving. This is part of the EI’s commitment to breaking down the barriers to entrepreneurship.

If you would like to find out about future opportunities like Gamechangers, sign-up to receive the EI newsletter.
