How to volunteer
Why use Twins for research?
By using your DNA profile and the clinical and questionnaire data we can compare similarities and differences between identical (MZ) and non-identical (DZ) twin pairs to estimate the importance of genetic and environmental influences in a wide range of common conditions such as osteoporosis, arthritis, diabetes, asthma.
So your unique contribution helps us to continue our important research in search of genes for common conditions, leading to advances in science, medicine and future potential therapies.
Who can register?
Any same-sexed twins, identical or non-identical, who are 16 years of age or older who would like to make a valuable contribution to medicine and research, as well as becoming part of one of the largest twin registers in the world.
What does participation involve?
All study participation is voluntary. We will contact you both for every study that you meet the criteria for and ask whether or not you wish to participate. If you agree you will either be asked to visit the Department where you will have a variety of tests and investigations or you will participate from home. At intervals we will also ask you to donate samples such as blood, saliva, cheek swabs, nail or hair and to complete questionnaires. We will aim to forward any clinically useful information to you and your GP.
At regular intervals we may contact you offering the opportunity to participate in media / publicity events to promote the Department. You will also receive an annual newsletter which will keep you informed of our research and all things twin-related in the news, as well as asking you to complete the annual questionnaire that keeps us updated on your health and contact details.
