Motivating and supporting future mathematicians

King’s supports King’s College London Mathematics School (KCLMS), a specialist state-funded School for mathematicians aged 16-19, who were selected for their particular enthusiasm and aptitude for Mathematics.

You’ll never find a place like this again, until you go to university…– Michael Udemba, Year 12, King’s College London Maths School

King’s researchers have been involved in the development of the curriculum at the School, which combines Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Economics and Computing A-Levels with the Extended Project Qualification that enables students to pursue individual research and construction projects. Students at the school also have access to a variety of university facilities including the library, and benefit from interacting with King’s academics and PhD students.

The students, who all had their university destinations confirmed, gained strong results across all the subjects taught at the School, with 95% attaining the highest A-Level grades (A*, A or B) – placing the School amongst the very top performing state schools in the country. Every student at KCLMS celebrated receiving an A* or a grade in their A-level Mathematics. Nearly a fifth of this year’s leavers have accepted offers from Oxford or Cambridge, and 85% from 21 of the 26 Russell Group universities including King’s itself. The relatively high proportion of girls at the School shows that it is improving historically under-represented girls studying STEM subjects.

They are brilliant, bright young minds and they are such fun to work with– Dan Abramson, Head teacher, KCLMS

The School was recently named as The Sunday Times state Sixth Form College of the Year. This is its debut appearance in the Parent Power rankings of sixth-form colleges, based on their performance in 2016. Last year, 69% of entries in the rankings gained AAB at A-level in two or more subjects required by leading universities, including English, maths or science. In the summer of 2017, 99% of students at the School achieved this, with 58% of papers achieving an A*, better than any other state or independent school in this year’s Parent Power.
