Biography
Molecular Biologist with an interest in diabetic complications and mitochondria.
Research
Malik lab
The Malik lab is part of the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences
Mitochondria & Diabetes Research Group
We are interested in understanding how mitochondria are involved in diabetes and its complications. The group also has an interest in developing methods to study mitochondrial dysfunction in complex diseases and in strategies for improving mitochondrial function.
Diabetic and non-diabetic Alzheimer’s disease: studying mitochondria in post-mortem brain to understand the underlying mechanisms
Diabetes can increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) through unknown mechanisms.
Project status: Ongoing
News
Link between diabetes and Alzheimer's could lie in energy production of the brain
New evidence suggests loss of energy supply to neurones is important in Alzheimer’s disease.
High fat, high sugar diet increases development of liver disease, study finds.
Researchers find link between diet, liver mitochondria and fatty liver diseases.
Damage to mitochondrial DNA in diabetes could underlie adult blindness
Researchers have identified mutations in the mitochondrial DNA of patients with diabetic retinopathy, that could increase the progression of the disease.
Program advisor for Biochemistry
