Biography
Farrer is a Research Associate in the Department of Geography.
Farrer has a BSc in Physics from Durham University, and an MSc in Planetary Science from UCL. He has also recently completed a PhD in Earth Observation & Environmental Science at King's.
Research
- Landscape fire
- Earth observation
- Smoke emissions
- Combustion phase
- Airborne remote sensing
Farrer's PhD research at King's focused on determining fire characteristics from remote sensing and their relationship with the smoke produced, as well as how well these new techniques can be used to improve wildfire emissions estimates. He was the science lead for FIDEX — airborne campaigns measuring wildfires in Canada (August 2023 and September 2024). Currently, Farrer works on the ESA FRM4Fire project, developing field measurement protocols for validating Earth observation-based fire products, and the ESA CarbonARA project, collecting airborne measurements of landscape fires and smoke in the Amazon during a campaign in 2025.
