What we do

iTEL Hub leads the strategic development of technology-enhanced learning and digital education within the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral and Craniofacial Sciences (FoDOCS) and the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care (FNFNMPC).

The iTEL team works collaboratively with academics, professional services staff and students to create high quality digital learning resources and in the development, delivery and support of online and blended learning programmes. The Hub supports pedagogical innovation to ensure that the educational integrity of programmes and modules is maintained and enhanced by optimising technical development and accessibility of materials for students and staff.

iTEL takes an active role in the implementation of the Digital Learning aspects of the King’s Education Strategy and Vision 2029 and the education strategy of the two faculties. We work closely with academic and professional services staff and students in both faculties and the University Central Services (King’s Online, King’s Academy, CTEL, King’s IT, Library) in order to embed learning technologies and support teaching, learning and assessment activities and initiatives.

Activities

Leadership in Digital Education and TEL

The team is managed by the Director; an academic with expertise in educational technology, who oversees strategic developments. The Director is supported by two Learning Technology Co-ordinators who supervise digital learning and TEL requirements from FoDOCS and FNNMPC.

In addition to providing support for FoDOCS and FNNMPC, iTEL facilitates innovative collaborations across King’s health faculties and beyond. iTEL Hub also facilitates and conducts workshops and seminars. These are coordinated with the King’s Academy, King’s Online and CTEL to support shared best practice. FoDOCS and FNFNM aim to fully embed TEL in a sustainable way through the following activities coordinated by the iTEL Hub:

- Deployment of KEATS (Moodle) virtual learning environment spaces for all courses/modules in response to increased student expectations
- Incorporation of pedagogical practices around TEL by providing expertise in curricular innovation in online, distance and blended learning
- Enhancement of the use of traditional learning technologies by incorporating informatics and TEL (e.g. simulation, haptic devices, physiological sensors)
- Provision of e-assessment technologies
- Exploration of emerging technologies (e.g. mobile and tablet devices learning analytics, open learning) to identify possible application for dental education

e-Assessment

The iTEL hub supports the incorporation of TEL for e-assessment in an effort to:

- Enhance student achievement
- Enhance the quality of feedback
- Provide secure automated marking systems
- Exploit other tools and technologies e.g. mobile technologies for exams
- Develop software analytic tools for gathering data for assessment e.g. e-portfolios
- Enhance e-assessment methods and techniques
- Promote self-assessment and self-reflection
