Paclitaxel-assisted balloon angioplasty of venous stenosis in haemodialysis access (PAVE RCT) Reliable vascular access is essential for patients receiving haemodialysis. An arteriovenous fistula is the preferred option; however, these are prone to developing stenotic segments. These lesions are treated with angioplasty, but there is a high rate of recurrence. We recently completed the NIHR funded PAVE trial which showed no benefit for paclitaxel coated balloons. The trial result has generated much discussion (see accompanying editorial) as a trial with a different paclitaxel coated balloon did shown an effect. We are currently planning another large trial to assess other types of drug-coated balloons.
