Course duration: 7 hours (9.30 - 16.30)

Venue: King's College London, Waterloo campus, 150 Stamford Street, London SE1 9NH. Click here for directions.

Participants will be awarded a King's College London Certificate of Attendance at the end of the day.

What does this course cover?

Through interactive lectures, group workshops and self-guided learning tasks, the course aims to provide an overview of the recent evidence and practices in the dietary management of IBS as well as innovative methods and strategies embedded in IBS dietetic pathways.

Furthermore, it aims to provide dietitians with evidence-based resources to read and use in practice or signpost patients for additional support at home.

Finally, the course aims to increase participants’ competence in the application of the first-line advice and the low FODMAP diet and increase their awareness towards a holistic approach for the management of the condition.

What will I achieve?

By the end of the course, participants will be familiar with the updated evidence and practices of the primary dietary recommendations and the use of probiotics in IBS management, which FODMAP-containing foods should be restricted during the low FODMAP diet as well as practices regarding the gradual re-introduction of FODMAP-containing foods towards a long-term personalised approach.

Participants are also expected to learn how to communicate the topic of gut-brain axis and signpost patients to evidence-based resources for additional support.

The course will include lectures on:

  • the diagnosis and holistic approach to the management of IBS, including digital technology in referral and triage pathways
  • recent evidence for dietary management of IBS, namely first-line and second-line advice
  • the use of probiotics as part of the first-line advice
  • the gut-brain axis
  • the management of IBS following a holistic approach as part of an integrated care pathway

The three stages of the low FODMAP diet as part of the second-line advice will be presented and discussed.

The lectures will be interactive and accompanied by group workshops and self-guided learning tasks.
