Arabic Level 2, Part 1 (Spoken)

Spoken Arabic is an integrated approach which aims to create an authentic environment for developing communication skills using Arabic dialects. Grammar will be embedded in the communicative activities.

• For the spoken part of the course, Egyptian, Levantine and Iraqi dialects are introduced in a systematic and simple way to help understand the differences between these dialects
• Standard Arabic for reading and writing.

The course focuses on:

• Making a connection between Modern Standard Arabic and the spoken dialects (such as Egyptian and Levantine), highlighting common linguistic structures
• Developing learners’ written and oral communicative skills using regional dialects
• Exploring and understanding cultural, social and political elements of specific regions where Arabic is spoken.
• Acquiring basic speaking skills for those interested in travelling or working in the Arab region, communicating with friends in Arabic as well as understanding TV shows, songs and movies.

Students will not be required to purchase a course book, as all the syllabus content will be prepared by the teacher, using authentic resources. However, a list of books and online resources will be recommended for self-study.

How is the course taught?

• An integrated approach is used. This includes teaching the modern standard Arabic with an integration to the spoken dialect (Egyptian and Levantine). All four skills (speaking, reading, listening and writing) are practised, with the main emphasis on speaking.
• Students engage in interactive language activities, participating in group and pair work according to a syllabus based on systematic grammatical progression.
• Students will also be offered guidance in self-study and set optional homework tasks

To develop existing language skills further and to achieve the equivalent of A1/A2 level of the CEFR.

By the end of the course you will:

• be able to understand general and detailed information and to communicate in standard speech on a range of everyday issues
• be able to read printed and handwritten script on a limited number of everyday topics
• be able to write simple texts using descriptive language accurately
• have developed intercultural competence
