Equality, Diversity & Inclusion in SSPP

The Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy is committed to equality of opportunity for all of our students, staff and visitors.

We aim to nurture a supportive culture among staff, students and visitors and an environment in which all people can learn, work and interact freely without fear of discrimination, prejudice or harassment.

We are committed to ensuring that all students and staff are treated equitably and are not accorded less favourable treatment because of age, marital/civil partnership status, sex, disability, race, colour, ethnic or national origin, sexual orientation, family circumstances, religious or political beliefs and transgender status.

We are also committed to enhancing the work-life balance of all staff in relation to caring responsibilities and other issues affecting well-being.

Our strategic plan

Achieving Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and creating a welcoming environment in which all can thrive are among our most important aspirations. Whilst much important work has been undertaken that has produced pockets of best practice, we have yet to find ways to create and fully embed transparent policies and practices that really deliver our EDI ambitions of parity and equity for all. This strategic plan provides a vital road map for a transformative, medium-term project for effecting necessary cultural change.

Our SSPP Code of Conduct

The Faculty has agreed a new Code of Conduct that sets out expectations around interactions and non-discriminatory practice. The code was developed through the work of the SSPP EDI Committee and endorsed by senior leadership within the Faculty.

Inclusive education

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about huge changes to the ways we all live, learn and work but we recognise that not all people are affected equally by the virus and related social restrictions. It is vital we consider equality, diversity and inclusion in the ways we are delivering our education during this time and so we have created new guidelines for those adapting our teaching provision in the current context.

Inclusive recruitment

This document is the first of a series of guidelines that will support colleagues across SSPP in the inclusive recruitment of new staff. This guideline is for colleagues who are tasked to write job advertisements for all roles, including professional services, academic, teaching and research posts.
