What's happening: LGBTQ+ History Month 2022

The Student LGBT+ Network, alongside other student and staff groups at King's and KCLSU, have prepared a very meaningful month to discuss, engage and learn more about LGBTQ+ History Month.

LGBTQ+ History Month is a month-long annual celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and non-binary history, including the history of LGBTQ+ rights and related civil rights movements. In the United Kingdom it is celebrated in February each year, to coincide with the 2003 abolition of Section 28 which prohibited the “promotion of homosexuality by local authorities".

KCL LGBT+ Society

The KCL LGBT+ Society is free for all students to join and exists to provide a fun, safe, inclusive and accessible environment for LGBT+ students and their friends to meet, campaign on behalf of the LGBT+ student community, and promote awareness of LGBT+ issues.

LGBT+ Book Club events

In Conversation with Jeremy Atherton Lin – Author of ‘Gay Bar' (An exploration of queer spaces and identities)
Tuesday 15 February, 17.45-19.30 (In person and online)

Join the LGBT+ Network for a conversation with Jeremy Atheron Lin about his book, "Gay Bar: Why We Went Out".

During the event, you will get a chance to engage in a audience-participatory conversation with Jeremy about the topic of his book, whether you've read it or not. There will also be discounted copies available to buy and get signed at the event.

LGBT+ Book Club with Paul Mendez - Author of 'Rainbow Milk'
Friday 4 March, 17.45-19.15 (In person and online)

The LGBT+ network returns to a more classic format of LGBT+ Book Club to discuss queer novel, 'Rainbow Milk'.

During the event, we will hear the author, Paul Mendez, read from his book, we will discuss the semi-autobiographical novel with him based on some discussion prompts, and we will open the floor to audience questions.

KCL LGBT+ Society Events

Create Your Own Queer Art - Craft Together Event
Wednesday 9 February, 13.00-15.00 (In person)

This year's LGBT+ History Month theme is 'Politics in Art'. Come along and try different crafts, such as crocheting, making stuff out of clay, or painting plant pots. 

OUTing the Past: An Evening of Queer History (Screening)
Thursday 10 February,18.15-21.45 (In person)

Join the KCL LGBT+ society for a sceening of the annual OUTing the Past festival. An evening of speeches about queer history, held to celebrate LGBT+ History month. 

LGBT+ History Month Drag Night
Friday 11 February, from 19.00 (In person)

The LGBT+ society host their very own drag show at Guy’s Bar with Loreley Rivers. 

LGBT+ Art Exhibition and Creative Workshops
Wednesday 16 February - Thursday 18 February (In person)

An open exhibition displaying student made art that celebrates the LGBT+ community, the space will host a series of closed creative workshops at 13.00 and 17.00 each day for ticket holders only.

Finding your faith: An open conversation about queerness and religion
Thursday 17 February, 18.30-20.00 (In person)

An event where queer people of faith can share their stories, with the intent to make a safe space for people questioning how their faith and sexuality and/or gender identity might fit together.

LGBTQ+ Allyship Leadership Class
Thursday 24 February, 13.00-15.00 (Online - Teams)

KCLSU are offering a Leadership Class helping you understand and learn how to practice allyship with the LGBT+ community.
