Overview

Mathematics is one of the most powerful ways humans have found to understand the world. It reveals hidden patterns, explains complex systems and gives us tools to make better decisions. Quantitative Mathematics is for students who want to go deep into mathematical ideas – and learn how to use them to solve real, complex problems.

On this course, you will build rigorous foundations in university mathematics while developing the modelling, computation, statistics and data-analysis skills needed in modern quantitative work. You will learn how to move between mathematical theory and messy real-world questions: forming assumptions, building models, testing ideas, interpreting results and communicating what they mean.

The degree has been designed around active mathematical thinking, collaborative learning and a structured quantitative modelling pathway running through all three years. You will graduate with a strong mathematical education and the confidence to apply it in mathematically intensive careers, postgraduate study or research.

Key benefits

  • Build deep foundations in mathematical thinking, proof and problem-solving on a mathematics degree designed for students with A-level Mathematics, without requiring A-level Further Mathematics.
  • Develop the modelling, coding, computation, statistics and data-analysis skills that will unlock a wide range of mathematical careers.
  • Learn through active, collaborative teaching that develops mathematical confidence, communication and teamwork.
  • Study in a leading Department of Mathematics: King’s is ranked 8th in the UK for Mathematics by QS and Times Higher Education subject rankings 2026.
  • Benefit from studying at a university ranked 6th in the UK for graduate employability by Times Higher Education Graduate Employability Rankings 2026.

Course essentials

The Department of Mathematics at King’s College London has a long and distinguished history as a centre for research and education. On the Quantitative Mathematics BSc, you will study in a department where rigorous mathematical thinking is connected to computation, data, modelling and real-world problem solving.

This is a modern mathematics degree with two distinctive strands. In your first year, two substantial foundational mathematics modules will help you develop the language, structures and habits of university mathematics: proof, abstraction, functions, sets, sequences and series, linear algebra, calculus and differential equations. These foundations are designed to support students with A-level Mathematics, whether or not they have studied Further Mathematics.

Running alongside this is a quantitative modelling strand across all three years of the degree. You will learn how to translate real-world questions into mathematical models, implement and test those models computationally, analyse data, handle uncertainty, optimise systems and communicate your findings clearly. This pathway is supported by modules in programming, numerical methods and statistical modelling.

As you progress, you will have increasing flexibility to specialise through optional modules in areas such as pure mathematics, probability, statistics, mathematical finance, complex systems, networks, mathematical biology and applied mathematics. In your final year, you will complete an advanced project in quantitative modelling, working from an externally defined brief and developing a solution to professional standards.

The Quantitative Mathematics BSc provides opportunities for you to develop and demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of the core principles, methods and structures of mathematics, statistics and computation.
  • Skill in constructing, implementing and interpreting quantitative models to represent and solve real-world problems.
  • Capability in using digital and computational tools to explore mathematical structures and analyse quantitative data.
  • Proficiency in communicating mathematical reasoning, results and implications clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • Experience in working independently and collaboratively on mathematical and quantitative projects.
  • Preparedness for employment or further study in mathematically intensive fields through reflective, ethical and professional practice.

You may be able to transfer to the four-year Quantitative Mathematics with a Year Abroad pathway and spend your third year studying abroad, before returning to King’s for your final year. This depends on meeting the required academic criteria and being accepted by a partner university.
