Course overview

Summer School modules are designed to be intensive, intellectually stimulating short courses. They are taught by King’s academics in academic disciplines where King's has expertise. Classes are highly international, giving students an opportunity to collaborate with peers from all around the globe.

Each module consists of 150 study hours, comprising 45 hours of intensive synchronous and asynchronous teaching, independent study and group work and is examined to university standards. Comparable to an in-semester 15-credit King’s undergraduate module and therefore typically awarded 3-4 US credits or 7.5 ECTS, many summer students ask their home institution to award them external credit for their King's summer module to use towards their degree programme when they return home.

What does this course cover?

Distilled from our BSc in Data Analytics for Business and Finance, this undergraduate summer module, taught by King’s Business School, has been carefully designed for students who are eager to gain a solid grounding in data analytics and its applications in business and finance. Whether you are new to the subject or seeking to broaden your existing knowledge, the module offers an intensive and practical introduction to this rapidly growing field.

Over ten days, we will guide you through the essential skills for data-driven decision-making. You will learn how to manipulate and visualise data, apply analytical problem-solving techniques, and gain hands-on experience with advanced data science tools. To ensure you can apply what you have learned in a real-world context, you will work collaboratively on practical exercises that synthesise data from diverse sources and generate actionable insights.

Each day, you will explore how data analytics connects with core areas of business, finance, economics, and technology. You will also be encouraged to critically reflect on the ethical and societal dimensions of using business and financial data. By combining technical acumen with broader critical thinking, the course equips you with both specialist knowledge and transferable skills such as teamwork, collaboration, and effective communication.

The course aims to focus on an interactive, engaging, and applied approach to learning about data analytics. We will use real-world examples, case studies, and group work to reinforce your understanding and demonstrate how analytics informs strategic decision-making in today’s business and financial environments.

By the end of the course, you will have developed a strong foundation in data analytics, positioning you for further study or future roles in data-driven fields. You will leave with enhanced employability skills and the confidence to engage with complex problems in business, finance, and beyond.

What will I achieve?

  1. Analyse the interdisciplinary links between data analytics, business, finance, economics, and technology to evaluate the broader context and relevance of analytical approaches.

  1. Use data science tools to interpret and synthesise business and financial data, generating insights that support evidence-based decision-making.

  1. Evaluate the ethical and societal implications of using business and financial data, and justify responsible approaches to data-driven decision-making.

  1. Communicate analytical findings effectively in written and oral formats, collaborate with peers on problem-solving tasks, and demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
