Digital Learning and Assessment Group (DLA)



To support the Academic Strategy 2020/21, a dedicated Digital Learning and Assessment group has been set up. The group works with colleagues in Faculties and Departments to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of blended resources to enable flexible teaching and learning across King’s.

The digital learning and assessment space is moving at a rapid pace, and there is a need to clearly identify learning resources and support services available to help you. These pages help identify key, college-wide learning resources and is full of updates, helpful tools, contacts, links, guidance and resources specifically designed to help you create and navigate successful online learning. You can also access links to the Flexible Teaching and Learning KEATS site, plus find out what resources we’re currently working on, what’s coming next and who to contact for all your local faculty online teaching needs and support.

King's Templates:
Released a centrally supported King's Education templates for KEATS and PowerPoint that are fully accessible and centrally supported.

Equipping King's students for ongoing digital success
A new Essential Digital Skills Programme is being created to equip King's students for success, by supporting their academic, professional and personal development.

Digital Wellbeing
A range of resources to support educators with their digital wellbeing.

Recommend equipment for staff and students
Curation of the available options to staff to support the creation of content. In addition, a list of recommend kit for students to engage in learning for 20/21 and the support options that are available.

Enhanced Resources
We are continually improving the resources available to you based on feedback and requests from the academic community.

  • Creating guidance on upcoming improvements to MS Teams Meetings, including breakout groups, increased capacity of up to 1,000 attendees and new reactions feature.
  • Capturing lessons learnt and piloting new forms on innovative e-assessment and feedback.
  • Further support guidance on digital tools for assisting professional staff.
  • Using KEATS and analytics to improve interaction and engagement for teaching and learning.
  • Improving KEATS course page through an upgrade to Moodle. This is part of several ongoing improvements to transform KEATS into a high-quality teaching and learning environment which is simple to learn and use.
  • Ensuring that our fully flexible teaching and learning content is accessible, inclusive and engaging via supporting tools, including Blackboard Ally, PowerPoint and KEATS templates.

From 28 September students will be able to access many systems which they may previously have only had available on campus by logging in via a secure web client.

A new Essential Digital Skills Programme is being created to equip King's students for success, by supporting their academic, professional and personal development.
What are the benefits of the Programme?
Students will learn:

  • How to use the required IT systems to support their academic development and gain confidence in their use
  • About key services, systems and processes that are available to support their academic, professional, and personal development
  • How to be a good digital citizen and develop a positive digital identity
  • About the digital skills required by employers
  • Receive a Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR) accreditation if students complete the programme and the relevant assessments. The HEAR accreditation will be added to your university transcript so that prospective employers know that you completed the Essential Digital Skills Programme

  • Delivery method and time commitment

  • It is a fully online programme that will be delivered via KEATS over the first two terms
  • Different activities will be recommended and supported during specific weeks, with catch-up weeks kept free from new activities to allow greater flexibility
  • The entire programme can be completed in around 30 hours with no more than two hours per week during term time

  • Who is this programme for?

  • It is open to all King’s students irrespective of Faculty or year group
  • The programme is not compulsory. Students have the option to take the programme

A part of Kings commitment to inclusive education, Blackboard Ally, an accessibility tool available via KEATS, is being implemented in Summer 2020 and available for staff and students prior to the start of the 20/21 Academic Year.

Blackboard Ally will add value to KEATS once enabled and assist staff with understanding accessibility considerations and facilitate the creation of more accessible content available from KEATS. Blackboard Ally does not fix content, but highlights issues and provides support as to how to improve accessibility. This will allow for greater awareness of accessibility considerations and will allow colleagues to implement the practice they learn on documentation/content which resides outside of KEATS.

Flexible Teaching and Learning: How do I...?

Whilst a range of tools are available to record video, Kaltura is a centrally supported King’s tool which allows for end-to-end video recording, editing and uploading to KEATS. Please note: video files should not be directly uploaded to KEATS as the file size can cause KEATS to slow and modules to become unresponsive for students.

Information includes:

Where considered necessary and where no students will likely be disadvantaged by this format (e.g. because of time zones), synchronous lectures can be delivered and be live streamed for students to attend online. Microsoft Teams Meetings is recommended for use with synchronous activities. Your faculty may have other webinar tools they use, contact your Faculty TEL Officer for more information on local provision.

In order to support colleagues with the rapid transition to a fully flexible teaching and learning delivery a number of recommended technologies have been highlighted. See the Technology Guides section of Flexible Teaching and Learning (internal KEATS module) for guidance. Technologies include:

  • KEATS (Moodle) as the core learning environment for the support and delivery of flexible learning. 
  • Kaltura as the King’s supported platform for the creation, editing and uploading of video content.
  • Microsoft Teams Meetings as the recommended tool to support the delivery of online synchronous teaching sessions.

  • All teaching staff will need to review their reading lists this year and submit them to Libraries & Collections.
  • Libraries & Collections are looking to make all core material available online but this will not always be possible due to the complexities of academic book publishing and alternative resources may need to be used.
  • A workshop on Creating Reading Lists for Online Learning is also available.

Student Engagement: How do I...?

Libraries and Collections can embed online learning activities, both synchronous and asynchronous into your module. 

These cover topics including literature searching, searching for systematic reviews and critical appraisal as well as introductions to unique collections and archive materials.

The Digital Learning and Assessment Group are made up of various teams helping to support the delivery of the academic strategy for 20/21.

James Toner leads Digital Education at King’s College London and is co-lead/convenor of the Digital Learning and Assessment Group. James' role includes heading the Education Solutions and the Centre for Technology Enhanced Learning (CTEL) team that has a cross-college focus on innovative, sustainable and scalable technology to support the student and staff teaching and learning experience.

Dr Kyle Dyer is the Academic Lead for Digital Education for King’s College London and co-Chairs the Digital Learning and Assessment Group with James. He is responsible for providing key academic input into the Digital Education Vision for King’s and into strategic planning for King's Online, KPED and CTEL, while supporting faculties in developing and adopting successful and consistent approaches to digital education. Kyle's role involves leading for innovation and adoption of digital education and ensuring that commitments to digital education are realised and implemented in line with the Education Strategy.

Jonathan Thompson is the Programme Manager for the Digital Learning and Assessment Group which includes overseeing the delivery of the task and finish groups and liaising with faculties about plans and preparations for Digital Learning for the 20/21 academic year.

Steph Hann is a Strategic Project Manager who works across the Strategy, Planning & Analytics (SPA). She provides project management for the Digital Learning & Assessment Group, as well as supporting on comms.

We have five task and finish groups that are focused on the following areas:

  • Staff Development and Support (Led by Lauren Cracknell and Sue Harrison)
  • Student Digital capabilities (Led by Nabila Raji and Dr Ellie Dommett)
  • Systems, design and Infrastructure (Led by Dr Vincent Giampetro and Philip Blake)
  • Digital Assessment (Led by Kathryn Connor and Dr Kyle Dyer)
  • KEATS reporting and data (Led by Philip Blake and Dr Anatoliy Markiv)
