Voices of Impact: Stories from King's Business School Volunteers

This year, King’s Business School was supported by a remarkable group of over 100 dedicated volunteers who gave their time, energy, and expertise to support the King’s Business School community.

From mentoring students and speaking at events to sharing insights from across industries and continents, our volunteers—based both in the UK and around the world—have made a lasting impact. To honour their efforts, each volunteer has been awarded a verifiable digital credential, recognising their invaluable role in enriching the student experience and strengthening our global network. In this special feature, we hear from a diverse group of volunteers, each answering a different question about their experience, motivations, and what volunteering at King’s has meant to them.

For some alumni, returning to King’s after many years offers a unique perspective on how the School has evolved. One such volunteer shares how their recent visit rekindled memories and highlighted the School’s impressive growth.

Having returned to King’s Business School after several years to take part in the panel, what stood out to you most about the experience, and how did it compare to your memories of being a student here?

‘I returned to the Business School after over 20 years (class of 2004). Taking part on the alumni panel, it struck me how far it has developed since my time here. It clearly focuses on an outstanding experience, equipping students with real world experiences and opportunities that will leave them well placed to deliver their career after graduation. This is clearly seen in the careers and alumni provision, and of course the outstanding facilities that are a quantum leap from what I experienced in 2004.

But while much has changed and improved, there is still a clear focus on teaching excellence. At the recent event, I got the chance to take in a session from one of the current staff which made me think back to my first experiences at King's - fascinating topics, delivered in an engaging way, motivating you to find out more about the subject. I think this is what will always make King's stand out.’

Other volunteers have remained closely connected, contributing regularly throughout the year. Their continued involvement has not only benefited students but also brought personal growth and unexpected rewards.

You've generously shared your knowledge with the King's community several times this year. Has volunteering in this way helped you develop any new skills or confidence, or brought you any unexpected rewards?

‘Volunteering with the King's community has been an incredibly rewarding experience. It's given me the chance to give back to the university that shaped so much of who I am, while staying connected to its vibrant and evolving community. Sharing my entrepreneurial journey with current students has not only allowed me to support and inspire the next generation but has also deepened my own sense of purpose and clarity. Engaging with alums from different years has sparked new ideas and meaningful conversations, reminding me that learning and growth never really end.’

Even from afar, King’s alumni find meaningful ways to stay engaged. One international volunteer reflects on how distance hasn’t diminished their connection to the School —and how global engagement continues to shape their journey.

How do you stay connected and contribute to the King’s community from abroad, and what does this global connection mean to you?

‘From abroad, I actively participate in alumni volunteering and virtual events, whether through mentoring students or contributing to King’s community initiatives. This not only allows me to give back but also enhances my own skills and connections.

This global connection means a lot to me; it enriches my personal growth and contributes to a more diverse community, even from a distance.’

For some, the decision to volunteer begins almost immediately after graduation. A recent alum shares how their desire to support others aligns with their personal values and professional aspirations.

What motivated you to start volunteering with King’s Business School so soon after graduating, and how did that decision align with your personal or professional goals?

‘I know navigating the career landscape can be challenging as a student, especially in this job market. Starting out and trying to understand how the financial landscape and workplace function is tough—but having a helping hand or a point of support can make a real difference. That’s why I love to share my knowledge and experience in hopes of making this transition easier for students. I want to help people and give back, and I believe volunteering with King’s Business School is a great way to do so. It’s wonderful that King’s organises these kinds of initiatives, and I’m proud to be part of something that supports students as they take their first steps into their careers.’
