Øyvind Eide has completed a MPhil in Humanities Computing at the University of Oslo and has been involved in digitisation and database development projects in the humanities and the cultural heritage sector since 1995. He is now a senior analyst at the Unit for Digital Documentation, University of Oslo. From 2009 to 2012 he is on leave to do his PhD.

His main research interests include exploring how people reflect and communicate about geography. His PhD project is supervised by Professor Willard McCarty and is a study of the semiotics of verbal description of landscape as opposed to graphical representation in maps. He uses computer based semantic modelling in order to discover the extent and manner in which the former yields richer description than the latter. The source material for the study is a set of Scandinavian border protocols from the mid 18th century.
