Leadership & society
How can personal freedom be balanced with national security? How can women gain greater representation in African societies?...How can our centuries old legal system adapt in our fast moving, increasingly globalised world?... What will it take to eradicate poverty?...
The world is changing too quickly for leisurely contemplation. But governments and international bodies have to get things right: the consequences of their decisions reverberate for generations. We’re already renowned for our expertise in war studies, international law, education and geography. Now we’re looking at the substantial changes in geo-political relations that have taken place in recent years, particularly the increased influence of Brazil, China and India. We’re studying how they, and others, will grow into some of the world’s largest market-based economies.
Ours is an interdisciplinary approach, working with national governments, international bodies such as the United Nations, nongovernmental agencies and other universities. The aim: an international, multi-faceted outlook, sharing knowledge with decision-makers planning our world’s future.
But increased projects and research need room to thrive, so we’re developing the East Wing of Somerset House. This will provide much needed space for our School of Law as well as a new artistic and creative hub.
Our key priorities in this area are:
-
Increasing our knowledge and understanding of areas of global strategic importance by creating interlocking regional institutes examining contemporary issues in influential regions: China, India, Brazil and others.
-
Technology and society. Discovering how space technologies can be used for the greater good of all. A permanent endowment of the Chair plus the research team and public engagement programme.
-
Peace through people. Creating new pathways to peace by sharing our knowledge and expertise about post-conflict societies, initially through the African Leadership Centre.
-
Law in a global society. Creating the intellectual frameworks to deal with today’s complex, trans-national legal questions.
