Biography
Wyn Bowen is Professor of Non-Proliferation & International Security, and Director of the Centre for Science & Security Studies, in the Department of War Studies at King’s College London.
Prior to joining War Studies in September 2007, Wyn Bowen was Professor of International Security and Director of Research in the Defence Studies Department at King's College London located at the Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC), Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, where he had previously been a Senior Lecturer (2002-2005) and Lecturer (1997-2002). Prior to joining King’s College London, Wyn Bowen was a Senior Research Associate in the Center for Nonproliferation Studies, Monterey Institute of International Studies, California (1995-1997). In 1994 he spent five months as a Center Associate of the Matthew B. Ridgway Center for International Studies, Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Pittsburgh. Wyn Bowen received his PhD (1997) and MA (1992) from the University of Birmingham, and a BA (Hons) from the University of Hull (1991).
Wyn Bowen served as a weapons inspector on several ballistic missile inspection teams in Iraq with the UN Special Commission in 1997-98 and has worked as a consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency and several government departments. He served as a Specialist Advisor to the House of Commons' Foreign Affairs Committee for inquiries into 'The Decision to go to War with Iraq,' (2003) and 'Weapons of Mass Destruction,' (2000).
Wyn Bowen has served on the Royal Society’s Advisory Committee on the Scientific Aspects of International Security (2008-2011) and the Royal Society’s Working Group on Nuclear Non-Proliferation. He is a Trustee of the Verification Research, Training and Information Centre (VERTIC) and a member of the Advisory Board of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) Journal. He was founding co-editor of the journal Defence Studies (Taylor and Francis).
