9 Weeks as a Comms & Engage Intern

01 May 2025

Hi everyone! I'm Petch and I graduated in 2024 from the Faculty of Arts & Humanities with a BA in Culture, Media and Creative Industries. Last summer, I joined the Communications & Engagement team at King’s Entrepreneurship Institute as a Summer Intern - find out all about my 9 week journey!

Getting started

In our first week on the programme, all the students taking part in summer internships and the Gamechangers programme were brought together for introductory workshops and activities to ease us into what the Entrepreneurship Institute (EI) does and our role within it. Learning about each other's ideas, passions and goals felt like forming a small community, which made me feel really supported. Connecting and engaging with so many like-minded people and establishing a support network really put me at ease and made me excited for what was to come!

Experiencing new things

During my time with the Comms and Engage team I worked on lots of different projects, including bringing together monthly stats on the EI’s social media channels. As an Arts & Humanities student, numbers have never really interested me, but I was surprised to find this task engaging!

I was able to interpret the stats I had collected to visualise which type of content performed best, as well as think about reasons why previous posts may have underperformed. These insights, alongside research into current trends, helped me with idea generation for future content.

Making fun content for those who aren’t incredibly familiar with entrepreneurship in the first place (as I was!) and introducing it in a digestible and accessible way became a goal of mine for the summer.

Taking the lead

One of my big projects was to lead on storyboarding, filming, and editing an Instagram Reel with a local business - Aguamiel - founded by Sarah and Bernardo, both alumni from King's Business School.

I began with storyboarding and scripting to outline the reel - something I’d never done before but proved to be helpful later on! I put together a shot-list to outline what clips I needed to get and in what order, which helped filming on the day go smoothly. Working with the founders to learn about their entrepreneurial journey and personal motivations was amazing, and we got a lot of great content! Once filming was complete, I worked on editing the Reel by recording a voiceover, putting the clips together, and adding EI branding elements.

This project was put together over the span of a few weeks, and seeing it go from just an idea, to a finished project was really fulfilling!

My last week

My last week as an intern involved preparing for the 'Interns and Gamechangers Final Showcase' - where all the interns and Gamechangers that I had met in the first week came together to share what we had all been working on.

I was able to present my work and reflections to the cohort, my peers and my mentors, and ended with a lovely evening catching up with everyone and their projects! It was amazing to interact with people in industry from so many different backgrounds and experiences and get to know about people’s projects on a more personal level!

Final reflections

I went into this internship as a bundle of nerves with very limited knowledge of entrepreneurship - hesitant and anxious to receive criticism and worried that I wouldn’t know what I was doing. I can say I’ve come out of it having learnt so much! I found that I was more glad than anxious about improving my work, and that imposter syndrome is fake! Believing in what you can do and taking action to continuously improve as you go, is a really valuable skill in not only your working life, but personal life too!

It’s been a truly insightful and worthwhile experience and I’ll carry everything I’ve learnt into my future career. I’m truly thankful to the EI team for creating such a supportive environment to learn and grow.
