Congratulations to Dina Asher-Smith on setting a new 200m British record
Congratulations to History student Dina Asher-Smith, who has set a new British record for the 200m.
Dina smashed the British women's 200m record in the final of the race at this year's Athletics World Championships in Beijing, China. The previous record had stood for 31 years, and was set at the 1984 Olympic Games by Kathy Cook. The time also sees her crowned as the fastest teenager in history over 200m.
Dina said she was 'over the moon' at the record. She told her Twitter followers she was celebrating by catching up with the Great British Bake Off and a Nando's.
Dina is due to start back at King's later this month. The Head of the Department, Dr Adam Sutcliffe, said: 'We’re immensely proud of Dina. Not only is she a world-class athlete, but she is also an excellent historian.'
'Her teachers have high praise for the quality of her written work and for the thoughtfulness of her contributions to seminar discussions. She has managed to stay absolutely on top of her work throughout her first year of study at King’s, despite her extremely demanding training and competition schedule. She achieved a first-class mark among her end-of-year results, and we expect great things from her in the future in the classroom as well as on the track! All of us in the History Department will be cheering Dina on over the coming year.’
Earlier this year Dina, who is due to start the second year of her BA History degree, also set a new British record for the 100 metres.
