Keeping fit to perform
Any student knows that exams can be stressful. In an effort to ease the pressure this term, Student Experience Manager Rabia Harrison has announced the launch of Fit to Perform, a scheme for second and third year students that aims to help participants stay fit and focused. Fit to Perform, a scheme for second and third year students that aims to help participants stay fit and focused. We talked to Rabia about the new programme:
What is fit to perform?
The purpose of Fit to Perform is to provide students with an opportunity to explore their studies through motivational sessions as well as some active classes.
Whilst there a number of support facilities available at the College, the School aims to implement a programme that will enable students to manage and balance the inevitable challenges that come with a law degree as well as to enhance their learning through wellness.
What will the programme involve?
The course will take place over four weeks in the first semester with a series of seminars and active sessions for undergraduate law students which are complemented by free classes in yoga, pilates and physical fitness sessions.
Running the physical programme are Andy Allford, the College’s Head of Sports and Active Lifestyles, and Susan Spencer, who has taught pilates in California for ten years.
Andy previously supported the GB Badminton team as their fitness coach at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and five World Championships and Commonwealth Games. He is committed to developing a programme with the School that encourages a study/life balance that underpins health and well-being.
As an experienced pilates teacher, Susan knows the stresses that lawyers (and law students) face and the benefits of pilates. She's excited to be teaching Pilates for Lawyers and participating in Fit to Perform at the Dickson Poon School of Law.
When does the programme start?
The Fit to Perform programme launches on November 13 with a talk by Flynn Coleman, who will explain more about the sessions. Flynn is an international lawyer, mindfulness and creativity consultant, as well as the founder of a social enterprise and an innovative human rights foundation.
Her talk is called: A motivational and inspirational talk on how to manage the stress and challenges of being a law student and lawyer. There is more information on Flynn’s website.
