Brazil Week 2024 Concept Note

With the help of a global commodity boom in the 2000s, Brazil expanded social policies, increased public spending on health and education, improved state capacity, and allowed greater policy input from civil society.

There is no doubt that the country capitalised on the fast-growing international demand for natural resources in order to tackle long-lasting socio-economic problems.

However, the environmental impact of heavy industry is often ignored, increasing tax revenues does not always compensate the affected population, and while official statistics demonstrate strong economic output, the reality for citizens living in extractive municipalities is much bleaker.

This is a stark example of the development challenges that Brazilians face today to achieve shared prosperity and a green transition.

In this interdisciplinary symposium, experts will delve into one of the G20’s priorities that Brazil set: “Energy transition and sustainable development in its social, economic and environmental aspects” and analyse questions related to Brazil’s persistent inequalities and the country’s new plan for a more eco-friendly growth model.
