Implementing the captioning and transcription service

The Captioning and Transcription Service is provided via King’s Video Platform (Kaltura) to enable Academic staff to request high quality human transcriptions for their lecture recordings. Prior to this service being available, automated transcriptions were available, but could be of limited quality depending on the subject matter, style of delivery etc.  Since the launch of human captioning in November 2020, the service has had a positive impact on King’s which includes:

  • Enabled accurate and timely delivery of captions/transcripts for lecture content published to students, including pre-recorded and live lectures available on-demand.
  • Human captions have increased accuracy to approx. 95-97% from 70-90% when done automatically
  • Nearly 150,000 minutes (2500 hours) of video content has been human transcribed across King’s, with FoLSM (27% of requests) and KBS (25% of requests) being the biggest users.
  • Met accessibility legislation stipulating ‘time-based media’ (pre-recorded digital content) be made available with captions/transcripts.
  • Went beyond the minimum automated captioning approach to deliver accurate and quality supplementary material to ensure all students can access their teaching at the point of delivery.
