Our work with industry

We work with businesses, small and large, and public sector organisations, artists, and local charities, to help solve their challenges with cutting-edge research and education.

Collaborations can take many forms, from bespoke consultancy projects to proof-of-concepts to feasibility studies to sponsored student projects all the way through to major strategic partnerships that realise bold, longer-term science research and education goals.

There is also funding available to resource new collaborations through internal seed funding, Innovate UK smart grants or knowledge technology partnerships, and Horizon Europe large collaborative bids.

Centre for Urban Science and Progress London

The Department is home to CUSP London (Centre for Urban Science and Progress London), an interdisciplinary research and education centre bringing together expertise from across King’s and the University of Warwick to apply quantitative and computational approaches to urban challenges, with extensive collaboration with public sector city authorities and other external bodies to ensure strong social impact.

Using AI to help improve the finance industry

Carmine Ventre, Professor of Computer Science at King's, is using AI to model financial markets and improve tools used in algorithmic trading and the finance industry. Working with the Alan Turing Institute and their partnership with Accenture and KI Insurance, Carmine and his team are simulating the Lloyd's of London Insurance Market, in order to shed light on its dynamics to better forecast future market environments and improve decision making.

OpenCorporates

We worked with London-based OpenCorporates, the world’s largest open database of companies. As part of the EU-funded research programme TheyBuyForYou, Professor Elena Simperl and Dr Eddy Maddalena built a tool that improves incomplete company records using online crowdsourcing.

This complex project required insight into micro-task design and strategies for recognising accurate answers, as well as an understanding of what motivates people to complete tasks effectively and accurately. The solution enabled cost-effective and affordable management of large amounts of company data. Better company data in the public domain enabled greater transparency and a level playing field.

Alan Buxton, CTO OpenCorporates said: "The software tool that King’s built and the expertise they provided really helped us in getting our entity matching service up and running – we couldn’t have delivered the project in this timescale without that."

Working with the Westminster City Council on the Strand/Aldwych data springboard

We are working with Westminster City Council to explore ways to innovate with data on their Strand-Aldwych redevelopment project. The Data Springboard project aims to build a platform for bottom-up engagements, decisions and innovations, enabling businesses and organisations in the neighbourhood reap the benefits of data sharing.

The team held workshops with public and private stakeholders and the general public to discuss how stakeholders could benefit from data sharing, the challenges we should focus on, and how we should approach data ethics.
