Our research

We work across the School of Global Affairs, the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy and the College to develop world class research focused on understanding Brazil – it’s past, present and future.

We accommodate a diverse portfolio of research, covering several areas and fields within the social sciences and humanities. This diverse and interdisciplinary approach has made us a home to both junior and senior scholars, who have joined either as visitors, affiliates, post-doctoral researchers or PhD students. Our staff and affiliates (present and past) are considered trustworthy references in their respective fields, with a reputable academic production. This is reflected in their score of citations and publications.

Our research is centered around four research clusters which help to organise the expertise of staff, affiliates, post-docs and PhD students.

Clusters focus not only on Brazil exclusively, but interactions between Brazil and Latin America, Africa, the lusophone countries and the rest of the world.

Brazilian Studies research

We are widely considered at the forefront of Brazilian Studies. In the last 5 years most of the discussion in this field, either epistemologically or applied, has had our research as a reference. The Institute hosts the top academic journal in the field of Brazilian Studies (Brasiliana – Journal for Brazilian Studies).

Ten years on

The year 2020 marked the tenth anniversary of the King's Brazil Institute. Under its founder and first director, Professor Anthony Pereira, we have established ourselves internationally as an academic point of reference for Brazilian Studies.

The 10-year report provides an overview of the Institute's activities between 2010 and 2020.
