Children's Health

HOW CAN WE HELP MORE SICK CHILDREN?

Expand our paediatric facilities.

Childrens healthEvelina London Children's Hospital has increased its activity by 50 per cent since opening in 2005.

As well as being an excellent community hospital in London, Evelina London welcomes patients come from all over the UK because we have such experienced specialists. We take referrals from as far afield as Liverpool, Leeds and Belfast.

In order to continue to treat patients, both local and national, we need to expand. This will give us the opportunity to centralise the current fragmented nature of children's health services in south London by concentrating activity on one site.

We want to give our young patients an even better service. Not only that, but because Evelina London works together with Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals, the healthcare we can provide is continuous: we're with patients from the moment they're born throughout their lives.

We are particularly proud of the exceptional care we offer in children's heart disease and heart surgery. In fact, work done at the hospital has led the international research and clinical practice in developing MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) as the preferred imaging technique in congenital heart disease.

The world's first MRI-guided cardiac catheter intervention was done here in 2009. This procedure involves using MRI images to insert a long, thin, flexible tube into a vein; the tube is threaded to the patient's heart. This allows doctors to diagnose and treat heart conditions.

By expanding and unifying all children's services on one site, we’ll be able to increase the number of referrals taken and reliably say ‘yes’ to emergency referrals from across their network in the South East.

However, expansion doesn't just mean a bigger building. Our vision for Evelina London includes:

  • a state-of-the-art cardiac inpatient ward
  • the expansion of the neonatal intensive care unit
  • more imaging facilities, including:
    • a new MRI scanner
    • a dedicated day-case procedure room
    • a new pre-assessment clinic
    • a cutting-edge hybrid operating theatre.
These new facilities will help us meet the growing demand for our services. And they'll also make sure that our doctors can improve patient outcomes in the most complex cases.

Evelina London was started with philanthropic help, and the hospital now needs to call upon our friends and supporters, to help us ensure that our world-class abilities are met with world-class facilities. Please give generously, and make a difference to our most vulnerable young patients.
