Centre for Climate Law & Governance

Climate change and environmental degradation are two of the most urgent and complex global challenges of our time. Their sources and effects interact with other global crises such as health pandemics and financial market instability, as well as imperatives of justice, equality and sustainability.

The Centre for Climate Law & Governance was established in 2019 to foster interdisciplinary research about legal and governance approaches to the disruptive challenges of climate change and sustainability in the Global North and South.

The Centre team comprises diverse and inclusive colleagues across a variety of disciplines who range from emerging scholars to established experts. In addition to research-led teaching and scholarly publications, we aim for high impact knowledge-exchange by engaging with organisations, governments, industry, and NGOs around the world.

Our activities and outputs include industry reports, policy documents, keynote presentations, media appearances, and convening professional events. Moreover, we work closely with other scholars and institutions around the world, and within King’s College London (including the Transnational Law Institute, the King’s Legal Clinic and the King’s Climate Hub).

The Centre agenda comprises research, teaching, engagement, and impact. We engage scholars and external stakeholders through a programme of activity that includes:

  • A Visiting Professor Programme and Annual Public Lecture Series
  • Invite-only expert Roundtables on discrete issues
  • Informal Armchair Sessions for generalist audiences, and Methods Labs for early career researchers
  • PhD-led Reading Group
  • Funded grant research activity
  • Research-informed teaching in the Undergraduate and Graduate programmes (please see Centre staff profiles for individual modules). This includes a reciprocal arrangement between the Law and Geography Schools for LLM and MSc students who can take a climate-related module from each other’s programme.
