Ideas and Funding

Finding Information

When generating ideas for a research project researchers need to be able to thoroughly and effectively review the published research literature to establish the current state of knowledge in their area of interest as well as to support funding proposals.

We recommend that students attend the subject-specific Information retrieval training provided by the Library Learning and Teaching Managers.

Support with funding proposals

As well as providing support for your literature review, Library Services can provide advice on data management plans to assist with completing a research grant or ethics committee application form required by many funders.

Research alerts

Advice is available on setting up research alerts to keep researchers up to date with research as it is published.

Funding alerts

The college subscribes to Research Professional leading publisher of research news and funding information for the international research community. Library Services can provide support with setting up email alerts for new funding opportunities.

Library resources

Check the library catalogue for all our print and electronic resources

If we don't have a book or other information resource you need to support your research, we may buy it for the library, borrow a copy from another library or use e-document delivery to your email account for journal articles.

Archives and Special Collections hold valuable collections which are a mine of information for researchers in particular areas, eg World War II or the History of Medicine and Healthcare. Research Guides have been prepared to aid those using the collections to get the most out of them.

Other Libraries

At research level it may be appropriate to visit other libraries to obtain the information you need.

Funding bodies web pages

Most of the major funding bodies now have web sites, and many have online application forms and guidance notes. See the links on the College Seeking funding web page (internal)
