Barry worked in the NHS for 25 years as a hospital pharmacist, undertaking additional secondments with King's College and UCL.  His university role included working on undergraduate & postgraduate education and foundation training for pharmacists, particularly the development of work-based learning and workplace-based assessment.  Barry has spent many years working as a tutor, trainer and pastoral carer of students in the workplace and at university.  He also trained as a teacher and a counsellor, using his training within and outside the profession.

Barry's perspectives on medicines and the wider health context are also influenced by his significant and on-going experience as a part-time carer and a patient.  Barry is dad to Alexander, who has Down's Syndrome and complex medical needs, and the family's experience in the health system has driven Barry's passion to help develop students and pharmacists as good citizens and excellent empathic clinicians. His practice interests include supporting patients with learning disabilities and their carers; and the need for empathy in clinical consultations.
