About Maria

Maria Herrero is a Maplethorpe Fellow in the Pharmacy Department at KCL and her research is focused on the application of computational methods to different aspects in pharmaceutical research and practice.

Maria graduated with a degree in Pharmacy from the University of Salamanca in Spain in 2008, and then worked as a community pharmacist for four years. Over the period 2008- 2010, she completed a Master of Research in Public Health at the University of Valladolid in Spain. She then took up a post as research assistant in the Computer Science Department at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, where she worked as the Pharmacy expert within a multidisciplinary team working on the development of computational systems in the pharmaceutical domain. She subsequently studied for a PhD in Computer Science and Technology at this University, focusing on pharmacological knowledge representation through the research and creation of annotated corpora and ontologies for the application of information extraction techniques. Maria obtained her PhD with Distinction in May 2015.

In her Maplethorpe research, Maria works under the guidance of Dr. David Barlow studying the repurposing of drugs for treatment of psychiatric conditions. This research project combines an epidemiological study relating to the treatment of schizophrenia (carried out in collaboration with Professor David Taylor and Dr Fiona Gaughran at the Maudsley Hospital) and a cheminformatics study for the development and application of computational methods in drug repositioning.
