About Dr Bini

Rafael graduated in Chemistry (Paraná State University, Brazil) and he did his PhD at the Institute of Chemistry (Sao Paulo State University, UNESP, Brazil) under the supervision of Prof. Miguel Jafelicci Jr, with emphasis on modification and functionalization of superparamagnetic iron oxides for applications in biomedicine (2011). He then took-up a 2-year postdoc position at the University of Sao Paulo (USP) with Prof. Laudemir Carlos Varanda. Currently, he is an academic visitor at King's College London (July 2014 to February 2015).

His research is focused on the synthesis of inorganic and organic nanoparticles, as well as their interactions as hybrid materials for biomedical applications. Incorporating superparamagnetic iron oxides in polymeric matrix could increase the drug delivery to specific sites, because the use of a magnetic field can assist in their vectoring, decreasing this way possible side effects. His current work at King’s College is focused on the preparation of injectable hydrogels containing polymeric nanoparticles embedded in the gels.
