Dr González-Gaitano graduated in Chemistry at the Universidad Complutense de Madird in 1992, where he did his PhD on the interactions of cyclodextrins and surfactants under the supervision of Prof. Gloria Tardajos in 1997. After that he obtained a position as Profesor Adjunto at the Department of Chemistry and Soil Science of the Universidad de Navarra, where he was appointed Profesor Titular in 2007.
