Connections & Outreach

We enjoy study-abroad exchange programmes with a wide range of international partners including departments at Heidelberg University, The University of North Carolina, Hong Kong University, Monash University and the University of Auckland. These are available to all undergraduate students.

A joint PhD programme connects KCL and HKU, Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3 and Heidelberg University.

Our academics are regular expert contributors to huge numbers of musical events, broadcasts, performances and publications for a wider public in London, nationally and internationally. In recent years we have collaborated frequently with institutions including BBC Radio and TV; BBC Proms; British Library; British Museum; Britten Sinfonia; Classical Opera UK; English National Opera; Glyndebourne Festival Opera; The Guardian; London Sinfonietta; Mahler Chamber Orchestra; Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra; Opera Rara; Oxford Maqam; Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Teatro alla Scala; V&A; Wexford Festival Opera.

In 2017 we collaborated with the Royal Opera House and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London to create a groundbreaking, free introductory MOOC (online course) “Inside Opera – Why Does It Matter?”. Designed and presented by Dr. Flora Willson, the course has also involved multiple King’s staff and postgraduate students and has attracted around 15,000 participants so far.

Our connections with the Royal Opera House also extend to the stage: King’s composer Sir George Benjamin’s recent Lessons in Love and Violence opened there, prior to a world tour of the opera, in the spring of 2018.

We’re proud to run the St. George-the-Martyr – King’s Music Academy, a widening participation music education project for Key Stage 2 children in the Borough of Southwark. The weekly Academy is run by King’s and St. George the Martyr staff, and involves King’s Music students as teachers and mentors.
