MSc in Data Science

Director of Studies: Dr Elizabeth Sklar

Programme code: TMSC1CTDSC

Educational aims

Please refer to the Programme specification for your year of entry

Programme Structure

Students are required to complete 180 credits as follows:
  • Compulsory modules (75 credits)
  • Optional modules (45 credits)
  • Individual Project (60 credits)

If modules from outside the Department are taken and the credits for these modules are higher than15, then the overall degree will be calculated out of the total number of credits and not 180.

  • Students take four modules in the first term and four modules in the second term.
  • Students choose their Individual Project’s topic in December/January, and are expected to work full-time on the project during the summer term, with submission at the end of August/beginning of September.
  • Students cannot choose modules outside the ones offered for this programme.
  • Please note that, despite our best efforts, some modules may overlap and you may need to be flexible in your choices. In addition, in the event of extremely low attendance or other unexpected circumstances, a module may be withdrawn for the year.

All module selections should be discussed with the Director of Studies

Additional Optional modules

* Cannot be taken by students who have previously studied in the Department of Informatics and have already taken this module at Level 6. If this is your case, please contact the Director of Studies for advice.

Please note that if you take a module which is outside of the Department (modules without a 7CCS code) then you will be governed by the rules of the host department. All reassessment regulations will be decided by the host department and may not necessarily be the same as Informatics.

Please note that if you take a module from outside of the Faculty then your graduation date is likely to be delayed due to the schedule of Assessment Boards. Please speak with the Programme Administrator for further details.

Basic requirements for the award of the MSc degree

  • Pass
180 credits at level 7, with an overall weighted average mark across all modules between 50-59% inclusive.
  • Pass with Merit
180 credits at level 7, with an overall weighted average mark across all modules between 60-69% inclusive.
  • Pass with Distinction
180 credits at level 7, with an overall weighted average mark across all modules of at least 70% inclusive.

In the Department of Informatics it is not necessary to obtain the required averages at the first attempt to be awarded a Pass with Merit or a Pass with Distinction.

Overall weighted average mark calculation

Multiply each module's mark x each module's amount of credits (15 for taught modules and 60 for the Individual Project), thus obtaining an overall total. The overall total must then be divided by the total credit volume (180 credits).

  • Up to 30 credits (two modules) if the marks fall in the 1-49% range.
  • Not applied to the Individual Project.
  • At the discretion of the Assessment Sub-Board of Examiners and only if all other 150 credits have been obtained.
