How to Apply for an MPhil/PhD
Identifying a Potential Supervisor
Look at our research sections and identify one or two academics who have similar areas of interest to your own. The potential supervisor you indicate on your application form, together with the Research Admissions Tutor, will evaluate your application: it may be valuable for you to contact the supervisor directly to discuss your interest before making an application!
Once you have identified the research area and the potential supervisor, you must formally apply through an application form quoting their name as a contact (to ensure the application is routed to the right person).
The Application Procedure
For detailed information about the application procedure, where to find the application form, which documents to include, and so on, please refer to the Admissions Office website.
Applicants may be interviewed, by telephone for those not based in the UK. If this is the case, the Department will contact you to arrange a suitable time for the interview.
We aim to notify you of the result within six weeks of receipt of the complete application (with all required documents) by the Admissions Office.
It is possible to apply for the MPhil/PhD in Computer Science, the MPhil/PhD in Telecommunications, the MPhil/PhD in Robotics and the MPhil/PhD in Bioinformatics throughout the year. However, please note that there are only four entry points: January, April, June and September.
Please indicate your desired starting month on the application form, and, if the application is successful, the exact starting date will be decided in consultation with the assigned supervisor.
