The King's Factor

The King's Factor

The King’s Factor is a unique maths after-school club, hosted by King’s College London, where Year 12 and 13 students are provided with an opportunity to enrich their mathematics in a challenging and supportive environment, bringing them together with other young people who have an enthusiasm for mathematics.

Led by staff from King's Mathematics Department, and assisted by King’s mathematics student tutors, our after-school club members are offered interesting and challenging problems which will be enjoyable and help develop understanding of mathematics, enabling them to confidently further study, and apply, mathematics.

Throughout the year students will also be able to access academic lectures, careers talks and opportunities to find out about current research in mathematics.

Sessions take place weekly between 17.00 and 19.00 on Monday and Tuesday during term time, alternating for groups of Year 12 and Year 13 students; so students attend one session per fortnight on their chosen day. We ask students to select either Monday or Tuesday nights and they are then committed to that night. Due to the timing of the club, a sandwich supper is provided for students.

Dates and details of how to apply for the 2019/20 programme can be found here once available.

The after-school club is delivered at the Strand Campus of King’s College London. Details of how to find us can be found here.

We will prioritise students who meet our application criteria:

  • attend a non-selective state school;
  • live or have lived in local authority care;
  • are a young carer;
  • are disabled;
  • live in a low participation neighbourhood;
  • do not have parent(s) or carer(s) who have studied at university in the UK or abroad;
  • have attended The King's Factor in the previous academic year.

“The Kings Factor enabled me to approach and tackle unfamiliar problems with confidence and clarity. With only one weekly hour session at school with a teacher who was unfamiliar with the STEP/ AEA questions,  working with students from all over London as well as enthusiastic postgraduate students and professors at Kings improved my communication and teamwork skills. This experience will stand me in good stead for when I begin to read Mathematics next academic year”. Year 12 student from London.
