Student Societies

Maxwell Society

Founded in 1935, the Maxwell Society is the Physics Department's student society. Our committee is an ambitious and committed group of physics students from a wide range of diverse backgrounds. We serve a dedicated group of members, formed by students, academics and staff members.

The society runs many events which range from talks given by external lecturers and potential employers, to social gatherings including hard and soft skill workshops. We also organise trips and opportunities to improve our members' academic prospects within the university, and their careers as young physicists.

Our mission is to provide an inclusive environment in which all years can socialise and help each other out. We further want to contribute to the academic experience at King’s. YOU can be a part of this amazing society to profit from all of our offers and events. At the same time, you will help us to make the society even more diverse by contributing with your unique character. YOU, joining the society, will continue to expand our ever-so big community, creating even better events and a more available support then there already is.

We serve a large group of undergraduate and postgraduates including alumni. Not only do we address physicists with events and opportunities, but also students within the NMS Faculty and beyond. We can provide a vast and supportive network, there to help you whenever and however you require some assistance including your wellbeing. The events we organise can give you a detailed insight into current research topics, Graduate Prospects and the industry itself. Seeing such successful scientists and their work, surely will motivate YOU and other students to aspire to new heights.

All Kings students are entitled to be members of the Society for an annual membership fee of £5. This fee goes toward subsidising the student-organised events throughout the year (some of which involve free pizza, so think of it as an investment).

Our main events are:

  • The Maxwell Lecture Series: Lectures on a range of science topics are given by world renowned speakers on their area of research.
  • XCL Lectures and King’s Talks: XCL Lectures are organised in collaboration with other societies/universities. King’s Talks are seminars where PhD students from King’s are given the opportunity to present their research to all staff and students.
  • The Cumberland Lodge Weekend: This residential weekend takes place near the end of February and is organised around a theme. Students spend two nights at Cumberland lodge; a five star hotel in Windsor. There they will attend seminars and participate in a variety of activities. The event is always popular and the cost of the weekend includes all activities, hotel, meals and travel.
  • Social Events / Workshops: A number of smaller events are planned every year. At the start of the year we have free freshers’ welcome events which are open to all including non-members, after that membership will be necessary to attend certain events (e.g. those with free pizza; god I love pizza).

All events will be posted on our website:
