Student societies

There are four societies affiliated closely with the Department:

Maxwell Society

Founded in 1935, by Sir Edward Appleton, the Maxwell Society is the Physics Department's student society. The society runs many events which range from talks given by external lecturers, to social gatherings and workshops. We also organise trips and opportunities to improve our members' academic prospects within the university, and their careers as young physicists. Our aim is to provide an inclusive environment in which all years can socialise and help each other out. We further want to contribute to the academic experience of King's undergraduates and members of the public by exposing them to world-leading speakers from outside the university.

KCL Space Society

We are a group of like-minded students with the simple requirement of an interest in space and/or a career in space exploration and development. We will be running many hands-on activities such as Astronomy, model rocketry, mini rover, high altitude ballooning designs and builds. We aim to get everyone free membership to the UK Students for Exploration and Development of Space and discounted entrance to our events, including the National Student Space Conference. Networking opportunities with industry, sponsors, and space organisations. Access to a national network of students and space enthusiasts, as well as speakers from academia, and all parts of the space industry.

KCL Womxn in Physics Society

The KCL Womxn in Physics Society was founded in 2015, by a second year undergraduate who wanted to address the issue of underrepresentation of womxn in the physics department at King's College London. This society aims to act as a safe space for all minorities in the field of physics, promoting an inclusive and supportive environment through a range of social, educational and academic events.

KCL Women in STEM (WiSTEM)

KCL Women in STEM (WiSTEM) is a network of students, professionals, academics, and researchers who support diversity in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) at King's College London. WiSTEM works to represent women, non-binary, and LGBTQ+ scientists at Faculty level and fights for better working conditions. WiSTEM also hosts a wide range of events to provide members with an inclusive STEMsisters support network.
