Navigating International Financial Regulation and Compliance
Law
Course overview
Recent action in 2025 by the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the Bank of England’s Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) as well as the EU’s European Central Bank (ECB) in the areas of non-financial misconduct, fintech and climate-related risks emphasized the relevance of international financial regulation. Even after the 2007-2009 global financial crisis (GFC), financial markets remain fleeting targets for regulation and supervision. Dive into our engaging course International Financial Regulation and Compliance designed to provide you with the critical rules governing two major global regulation regimes: the UK and EU models. Whether you’re managing financial services or offering accounting, investment or legal advice, this course empowers you to navigate these constantly evolving areas with confidence and expertise.

Course features
Explore the key guidelines established by global financial standard setters such as the BCBS, FSB, FATF, as well as IOSCO and discover how these are applied through UK and EU legislation. We observe how the UK’s approach with its Financial Services and Markets Act (FSMA) 2023 shaped its regulatory and supervisory framework post-Brexit, continuing to onshore certain elements of EU financial regulation, but otherwise assured London’s role as agile and premier global financial centre. With regards to the EU’s regulatory framework, we closely analyse its development towards the only supranational banking union, with the ECB’s Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) and study its modern fund management and securities regulation, such as UCITS, AIFMD, MAR, MiFIR and EMIR overseen by the European and Securities Markets Authority (ESMA). We will cover regulation of crypto-assets, with the UK amending FSMA 2023 and FSMA 2020, as well as EU Regulation 2023/1114 (MiCAR) at the heart of the EU’s digital finance strategy.
Bank governance and risk management
We will place particular emphasis on the governance of credit institutions (banks) and other financial services firms, including rules mandating the establishment of second line of defense internal control functions, such as compliance, cybersecurity and data protection. You will learn what the FCA’s and ECB’s expectations towards those functions are within risk management of a financial services firm, and how you can structure a firm’s internal processes to remain compliant.
Regulation of key financial products
Additionally, the course offers a thorough analysis of key financial products, including crypto-assets, securities, bonds, asset-backed securities, derivatives, as well as syndicated loans. You will examine these products in the context of the GFC, its regulatory aftermath, gaining insights into how regulatory standards influence their structure, trading, and risk management. This comprehensive examination will equip you to effectively navigate the complexities of financial instruments in a regulated environment.
